On Board Since April 2000 OCSC: Why do you sail? PF: Tough question to answer. One of the reasons I love sailing in San Francisco Bay is because it allows me to get away from the traffic and craziness of city life. A peaceful evening sail among friends and family keeps me strong and happy. OCSC: What do you enjoy about working at OCSC? PF: I am surrounded by a great team, and I get to meet new people every day. I consider myself very lucky to work outside and on the water with a fantastic view of the bay. I have the opportunity to constantly improve my seamanship and boat knowledge. And I enjoy the pressure and challenge of keeping the fleet up and running through the busy summer. OCSC: What's your sailing background? PF: I grew up sailing on the coast of Massachusetts and New Hampshire with my family (dinghy, Rhodes 19, Cal 27, C&C 30). Since joining OCSC, I have taken advantage of the varied sailing opportunities as often as possible. I have some experience racing Rhodes 19s in Boston Harbor and J24s on San Francisco Bay, but I generally prefer recreational sailing. In the summer of 2003, I served as first mate on a number of boat deliveries between Rhodes and Athens in the Aegean Sea. OCSC: When you're not sailing, what can we find you doing? PF: Reading, taking walks with my dog through the Presidio, catching a ball game at the park or on the radio, and getting a taste of some real summer weather in beautiful and secluded Lake County.
OCSC: What are your top five sailing books of all time? PF: In no particular order: Papillon; Jack London's Tales of the Fish Patrol; Nigel Calder's Marine Diesel Engines; Herman Melville's short stories; Ernest Shackleton's Endurance.
