OCSC's Croatia Flotilla
Croatia - the "Jewel of the Adriatic"
With a sunny Mediterranean climate, Croatia provides a spectacular cruising ground with abundant anchorages, marinas and ancient cities. The Moorings' new base in Dubrovnik is at the heart of these fabled waters. An ancient walled city dating back to the 13th century, Dubrovnik is said to be the most perfectly preserved medieval town in the world -- its tall ramparts and towering spires are virtually untouched. Lined with small courtyard cafés, the narrow cobblestone streets lead to splendid squares packed with colorful markets, restaurants and bars. Almost enough to forget about casting off... but not quite...
The sailing from there is renowned -- clear blue waters, mythic islands and great breezes for exploring all the coastal area has to offer. Just to list a few stop-offs:
Korcula
Korcula Island is easily reached by a cruise along the wooden coast. Known as "Little Dubrovnik", it's where the famous adventurer, Marco Polo, was born. It's also home to traditional knight dancing!
Brac
Superbly famous for delicious olives, figs and nectarines, the spectacular beach at Bol is also a "must see". Here's a little piece of trivia for you -- Brac stone was used to build the White House.
Mijet
A densely wooded island (and also a National Park), Mijet is where it's believed that the nymph, Calypso, enchanted Ulysses. You'll be drawn by Croatia's spell too, but don't be surprised if you make a dolphin friend or two along the way -- they're known to skip in the wakes of yachts.
So there you have it -- a thousand islands set in the blue Adriatic sea, remote anchorages guarded by Venetian forts, and fine Italian cuisine all right in the heart of Europe! Croatia has long been the best kept secret of European sailors -- discover it for yourself in the company of friends.
