OCSC's Racing Rules 101B:
"Exploiting the Racing Rules"
Presented by Captain Michael Whitfield
Building on our Racing Rules 101A seminar, Captain Michael Whitfield leads racing sailors around the course with his own wealth of racing experience and a customized PowerPoint presentation. From the pre-start sequence to the weather mark to your leeward rounding and then up to the finish line, you'll learn how to exploit racing rules tactically and competitively, and you'll learn important tricks to hold your own while racing other sailors.
Text Included:
- Understanding the Yacht Racing Rules, by Dave Perry (if you own this or have it from a previous course, we'll deduct the cost of the text from your course fee.)
Topics Covered:
- The Start -- protecting your "hole", attacking a windward boat, being aware when you are OCS, double-checking the course flag upwind, when to cross, when to tack, when to duck
- Performing a "leebow" maneuver and protecting yourself from one
- Why is "being inside" so important when approaching a leeward mark
- Why the two boat length circle at the weather mark so important to understand
- The many ways to use the leeward mark to gain advantage asserting your rights in advance
- Helping your competitors to "do the right thing"
- We will cover the changes between the 2004 – 2008 Rules and the "New Edition" 2009 – 2013 Rules that went into effect January 1st, 2009
Good To Know:
